Keith Olbermann Nails Bill O'Reilly Lying....Yet Again

Keith Olbermann catches Bill "loofah" O'Reilly lying yet again (I know, I know he lies all the time) about the ratings success of his show and lack of success of Keith's show. Naturally, because he is a compulsive liar, he gets it backwards. In this video Keith also mentions Air America Radio and Al Franken also which must just drive Bill crazy, but you must see this for yourself because how Keith does this piece is just.....brilliant.

The pressure must be getting to Bill.

Enjoy.

Al Gore On The Daily Show

Al Gore was on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart to talk about global warming and the documentary An Inconvenient Truth.

Shining Movie Trailer

Coming this fall, Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall star in a heartwarming story about a family's journey of self-discovery. See it again and again.

This guy did a great job with this parody movie trailer.

Bruce Springsteen & The Seeger Sessions Band - Bring 'Em Home Live Video

Bruce Sprinsteen singing Bring 'Em Home from his new Pete Seeger tribute record We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions.

Gee, I wonder what he could possibly be singing about?

Buy it here.

Rick Santorum's Phony WMD Claim

Rick "man on dog" Santorum would like you to believe that the U.S. invaded Iraq and killed 2500 soldiers, wounded 20,000 and killed tens of thousands Iraqi civilians in an illegal war over old mustard gas artillery (those elusive WMD) shells from the Iran/Iraq war (you know the war the U.S. supported Iraq while they were using these munitions) that were buried out in the desert near Iran.

Santorum is hoping the rubes and dupes will fall for it. Santorum is obviously a liar who needs to get his sanity checked out if he really believes what he says.

Adam Ant - Desperate But Not Serious Video

This was one of the first videos I saw on MTV and they showed it on a very regular basis. A bit of silly fun with Adam Ant, who definitely liked the camera and he has a bit of tongue in cheek charisma. I still don't quite get what the boxing theme has to do with the song though.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Red Right Hand Live

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds live in 1998 playing Red Right Hand at some outdoor festival. I think this song is a little too subtle for the festival crowd but it is a good performance. The Bad Seeds are a great band and Nick is a wonderfully talented songwriter.

Who has made better albums in the last 20 years?

Red Right Hand is from one of my favorite's of Nick's called Let Love In.

Buy it here.

Bruce Springsteen & Sting - The River Live Video

This must be from the Amnesty International Conspiracy Of Hope tour of the mid 80's.

Jon Stewart Comments On The Minimum Wage Video

Jon Stewart the brilliant anchor of The Daily Show nail congress with some biting remarks on not passing the minimum wage hike, which would have been the first one in almost a decade. This Republican congress did pass their own pay raise however.

Don't forget they want to get rid of estate taxes, or the "death" tax as they call it, completely.

Evil, but nothing new for them and they are liars too. Nothing new about that as well.

Ron Suskind & The One Percent Solution

The author Ron Suskind was interviewed by Wolf Blitzer (who has about as much depth as a birdbath) and he confirms many things, that many people had suspected. Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda wanted George Bush to get reelected President in 2004 (although it is quite obvious why they would want this to happen) and the U.S. bombed the Kabul office of Al-Jazeera on purpose to make a "statement" to the network.

Oh and surprise of surprises Dick Cheney is not only the most powerful Vice President in history but he is also very paranoid and suspicious.

Imagine that.

Keith Olbermann, Al Gore & Global Warming Video

Al Gore
was on Keith Olbermann's Countdown show last night to talk about global warming and the movie An Inconvenient Truth. They both compared people who don't believe global warming is actually happening to people who believed, or still believe, the earth is flat or the people who think the moon landing happened on a movie set somewhere.

You know, like in the movie Capricorn One, except in the movie it was a Mars mission instead.

But you get the idea.

Wire - The Ideal Copy

I was exposed to Wire in 1987 with the release of The Ideal Copy (the cd also has the Snakedrill EP from 1986) which was their first record after an 8 years hiatus. A dark, sort of minimalist post punk record with wonderful use of synthesizer textures, sequencing and tape loops help create almost a european dance rock ambience on these mostly melodic "pop" songs. Many of the lyrics are surreal or sometimes they just come from the Brian Eno school of lyric writing, which means if they sounded good they went in the song no matter if they make sense or not, but it works with this album.

And no, I am not very familiar with Pink Flag, and yes, I know it is blasphemy.

Here is the rockin pulse of Ahead and the twisted and spare Feed Me for you to check out.

Buy it here.

Check out the video for song Ahead. It is well worth watching.

This record would be high on a list of 80's favorites for me.

Noam Chomsky At West Point

A short clip of Noam Chomsky answering a question from a cadet about the reasons for the Iraq invasion.

I find it very strange that this happened almost two months ago and I never heard about it and I find it even stranger that he got invited to speak at West Point at all.

John Murtha, Karl Rove & Iraq

Which one do you think is telling the truth about the Iraq war?

Yes, this is a test. A test of your ability to reason to be able to tell the difference between a talking point and fact. One is fantasy and one is reality. One is politics and one is not.

Answer?

David Sirota, John Stossel & The Minimum Wage

David Sirota, the author of Hostile Takeover, has a short "discussion" about the minimum wage with the right wing (whose religion is the "free market") "journalist" John Stossel who is out peddling his new book called Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidity which sounds like a perfect desription of it's author. Sirota wrote an article recently in which he called Stossel a pathological liar which should be obvious to anyone who has ever watched this guy spewing his right wing talking point lies on national tv.

This does not go well for Stossel because David uses this antiquated thing called facts that most tv talking heads are not familiar with. So you have reality and facts against fantasy and right wing talking points.

Guess which one wins?

Buy David's book here.

Really?

"At his news conference Wednesday, Bush also predicted Republican victories in November, saying the GOP "philosophy is one that is forward-looking and optimistic and has worked."

Does Bush know something we don't know? You know, like the fix is in?

Let's look at this "philosophy" shall we.

Invade a country that didn't attack us.
Lie about the reasons for the attack.
Cut taxes to the rich.
Create the biggest defecits in the HISTORY of the U.S.
Roll back environmental standards.
Out a CIA agent who works on WMD.
Real wages are down.
Healthcare costs are up.
Screw up helping victims of Katrina.

These people despise government yet want to be in government. Doesn't make much sense does it?

Unless you want to destroy the government and then it does.

Joe Jackson - Right And Wrong Live Video

Joe Jackson playing his Reagan era song Right And Wrong live from the Big World record and tour of 1986.

Strange how it seems so perfect 20 years later.

It's like deja vu all over again and again and again.

We Should Not Be Echoing Lies

New York's Jerrod Nadler points out the lies about WMD (remember them?) and the lies about Iraq/Al Qaeda connections used to justify the invasion of Iraq yesterday during the debate on the Iraq war resolution the Republican's are going to try and use as a political tool for the midterm elections.

Going by the success they have had in the past in fooling the rubes and dupes they are counting on it once again.

Will it work?

Steve Earle - Copperhead Road Promotional Video

From the first chapter of his career (before he landed in prison on drug charges) comes the Copperhead Road video from Steve Earle about a man from a family of bootleggers who comes back from the Vietnam war with a new plan in mind....to grow marijuana. A different kind of cash making enterprise than moonshine. Times change.

You can imagine how well this song went over in Nashville. Steve could care less though, he never was part of the mainstream country establishment anyway. By this point in his career he was sounding more like a pop/rocker along the lines of John Mellencamp than anything else.

Great songwriter and I like his politics too.

Rolling Stones - 2000 Light Years From Home

The Rolling Stones promotional video/film for 2000 Light Years From Home from Their Satanic Majesties Request record of 1967. The Stones most psychedelic album and obviously extremely influenced by The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band record from the cover down to the music and the production.

It was very obvious who was leading and who was following at the time.

One Strange & Wonderful Commercial

I saw this commercial for the first time in 1994 and was completely blown away by it. For a commercial it is very strange. Using the Velvet Underground s&m song Venus In Furs as the soundtrack with wonderfully bizzare images that look like they were inspired by Fellini's Satyricon this is a commercial for Dunlop Tires. Basically it looks like a very good music video.

I kid you not.

The Doors - Break On Through (To The Other Side) Promotional Video

The Doors made one of the earliest promotional "videos", or more correctly films, with Break On Through (To The Other Side) which was the first single from their debut record. It is very simply done with the use of lots of shadows and darkness framing the group as they played along to the studio recording and it helps that this is a really great song. This is the same technique many of the early videos shown on MTV used because it was cheap, quick and easy to do and it worked as you can see. The Beatles, Rolling Stones and The Who also made some in England during the mid 60's with more of a "story line" to some of them.

George Carlin - How Stupid Are People?

George Carlin was on the Dennis Miller Live show on HBO in 2001 and talked about how stupid and gullible people are. George is going to be on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno Wednesday along with Ann Coulter which should be quite interesting. Ann Coulter is insane, yes insane and makes money off stupid people which is why I posted this video. I don't think much of Dennis Miller either, after 9/11 he became a wimp who needed the protection of the Bush administration because he was afraid of boogey men terrorists coming to get him.

I was thinking after I posted this late last night that some may not like what Carlin has to say here, but it was late and I was tired so I went to bed and slept the fitful sleep of an adult just like so many of you I would imagine. I guess it is cynical to think that so many people and let's be honest here, he was talking about my fellow citizens of the USA, are really that easily persuaded and gullible. Unfortunately, since 9/11 especially, I would say that the evidence is in and it ain't pretty when you look at it up close. Since I assume anyone reading this a functional human being with the capability of looking at the last 5 or 6 years with some semblance of critical thinking skills and experience developed in the "real" world that you have gathered over your lifetime I don't really need to lay it all out for you.

I sure hope not.

Iggy Pop - Funtime Live

Absolutely great performance by Iggy Pop with David Bowie on keyboards peforming Funtime live on the Dinah Shore show in 1977. I believe that is Rosemary Clooney talking with Dinah at the start of the footage.

Priceless.

Bobby Womack - California Dreamin' & Across 110th Street

Bobby Womack solo on acoustic guitar doing California Dreamin' & Across 110th Street live. Looks to be fairly recent and it is a really good performance in this video.

Frank Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim

This video is from a Frank Sinatra special shown on tv in 1967 where he did a medley of songs (while smoking) including Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars) and The Girl From Ipanema with Antonio Carlos Jobim on guitar and vocals.

I love Jobim and dig Sinatra. They are both very laid back and relaxed playing Bossa Nova as they should be.

It's very cool, baby.

999 - Homicide

The late 70's English punk band 999 with the video for Homicide.

Hey Joe

Steve Winwood on vocals and organ, Slash on guitar, Billy Cox on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums do a long, slow and bluesy version of Hey Joe live. Well worth your time.

The song written by Billy Roberts has long been associated with Jimi Hendrix, but many artists have covered it including The Byrds, Deep Purple, Love and Black Uhuru to just name a few.

Tom Tomorrow At The Yearly Kos Convention

Tom Tomorrow the author of This Modern World spoke at the Yearly Kos blogger convention in Las Vegas. You can watch Tom show off some of his cartoons from his new collection called Hell In A Handbasket. A favorite of mine is about the chickenhawk's fighting the Iraq war from the keyboards of their computers. Very brave.

You can buy his collection here.

I highly recommend it.

80's Video Clip Week: Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Two Tribes

Frankie Goes To Hollywood were a one hit album wonder with Welcome To The Pleasuredome while Frankie mania swept England in 1984. Brilliantly produced by Trevor Horn with session musicians doing most of the playing the record has some brilliant songs and some filler as well but is well worth having. Two Tribes was one of the best songs on it and the video is great fun and has a point to make. Ah, the cold war and the threat of nuclear annihilation, those were the days.

80's Video Clip Week: Red Rider - Lunatic Fringe

Red Rider had quite the FM radio hit with Lunatic Fringe in the early 80's. Tom Cochrane's tune holds up quite well over 20 years later. The video isn't cheesy like many were in those early days of MTV.

Since this video seems so relevant now I dedicate it to the neo-cons and all religious fundamentalists of the world.

Saturday, June 10, 2006

80's Video Clip Week: Russ Ballard - Voices

Russ Ballard was the former lead singer of Argent who got a hit with his mid-80's song Voices. He also wrote hits for others such as Three Dog Night's "Liar" and Hot Chocolate's "So You Win Again."

You will know this song when you hear it even if you don't recognize the title. It's one of those songs.

80's Video Clip Week: Prince & Sheena Easton - U Got The Look

Prince does his thing with Sheena Easton and Sheila E. in this over the top video of U Got The Look from the great Sign 'O' The Times double album. For those of you who remember double albums.

Jack Cafferty - On Arlen Specter Again

Jack nails Specter for not holding hearings on the NSA illegal spying and coming up with a compromise that allows the Justice Dept to look into it and there will be amnesty for anyone involved in the spying. Of course, why would you need amnesty if it isn't illegal?

Jack Cafferty knows bullshit when he sees it.

80's Video Clip Week: Missing Persons - Words

A sort of hard rocking new wave band Missing Persons was fronted by singer Dale Bozzio with the band start off strong but they didn't last more than a few albums. Founder and Drummer Terry Bozzio was a veteran of Frank Zappa's band as was guitarist Warren Cuccurullo who would eventually become a member of Duran Duran after Missing Persons disintegrated, bassist Patrick O'Hearn would go on to become an electronic "new age" music star on the Private Music label. Dale looked good in videos which certainly helped them, plus they had some good songs.

80's Video Clip Week: Berlin - The Metro

Berlin was one of many early 80's synth-pop bands who had some hit songs at the start but faded down the stretch. The Metro was one of them off the Pleasure Victim debut record and it didn't hurt that they had Terri Nunn singing the songs (bassist John Crawford wrote most of them) and looking good in the videos. But I guess that was the point or at least part of it.

Jack Cafferty - On Arlen Specter

Watching Jack Cafferty call Arlen Specter "yet another gutless Republican worm" on national tv is absolutely priceless. Great fun for the whole family. This is of course about a serious subject, NSA illegal spying on citizens, which is why Cafferty is so pissed off in the first place.

This isn't about a President getting fellatio from an intern, which if you remember 1998 and all the coverage of that joke of a fiasco you would have thought something important was happening at the time. It was important only in the sick twisted minds of people who claimed they were going to bring "dignity" to the White House. Unlike now, where it's just subversion of the Constitution and our country sliding toward fascism.

Nothing too important about that.

80's Video Clip Week: Bauhaus - Spirit

Bauhaus video of the song Spirit from The Sky's Gone Out album. Peter certainly seems comfortable in front of the camera. I believe there is a different version of this song that I remember liking better than this one which I think is the single mix.

Update: Apparently this is a re-recorded single version. The one I like is the album cut.

Bill Hicks - Creationism

Since I posted about the "Christian" (let's be honest they are right wing fundamentalist Christians) video game earlier I thought I would post this nice little segment from Bill Hicks talking about their favorite subject ...creationism.

Left Behind: Eternal Forces.... It's A "Christian" Game

Here is a preview for the "Christian" video game that is coming out soon called Left Behind: Eternal Forces. What is it about you might ask?

According to Talk To Action:

"Imagine: you are a foot soldier in a paramilitary group whose purpose is to remake America as a Christian theocracy, and establish its worldly vision of the dominion of Christ over all aspects of life. You are issued high-tech military weaponry, and instructed to engage the infidel on the streets of New York City. You are on a mission -- both a religious mission and a military mission -- to convert or kill Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, gays, and anyone who advocates the separation of church and state -- especially moderate, mainstream Christians. Your mission is "to conduct physical and spiritual warfare"; all who resist must be taken out with extreme prejudice."

Mark Morford has a great column on it that you can read here called Jesus Loves A Machine Gun.

I have one word for this game and the thinking behind it.

Actually I have a few words....are these people fucking insane?

Ah....much better now.

Bill Hicks

Bill Hicks in a little video montage talking about Iraq and incredible weapons. It's just like deja vu all over again.

80's Video Clip Week: Echo & The Bunnymen - The Killing Moon

One of my favorite post-punk bands out of England, Echo & The Bunnymen never quite got as big in the U.S. as The Cure or Depeche Mode, but were huge stars in their home country. The Killing Moon is one of the best songs they ever did.

Thursday, June 08, 2006

80's Video Clip Week: Visage - Fade To Grey

Fade To Grey is the classic hit of the "new romantic" movement by Visage which featured frontman Steve Strange, Midge Ure of Ultravox, John McGeoch and Barry Adamson of Magazine as well. You could say it was kind of an all star line up of post-punk and synth-pop musicians.

80's Video Clip Week: Gary Numan - I Die: You Die

Gary Numan had a huge hit in 1979 with Cars but he had some more good song besides that one in him. Here you can check out I Die: You Die from one of the first big synth-pop stars of the early 80's. Considered an early influence and inspiration for techno Gary now makes harder edged, more industrial "gothic" music.

Buy it here.

80's Video Clip Week: John Foxx - Underpass

John Foxx was a founder and the original singer of Ultravox! before he left after three records to pursue a solo career in 1979. He spent the most of the year working on his first record, Metamatic, almost entirely by himself which was released in early 1980 and it contained the UK hit single Underpass. Metamatic is a true electronic (or "minimalist European urban electronic folk music" as he called it) album made almost completely with synthesizers and drum machines with only a couple of songs having the occasional bass or piano part. I think it is a great record and it still sounds quite "modern" as the saying goes. It has a very unique vibe to it and if you are a fan of this kind of music it is a must have record in my opinion.

Buy it here.

80's Video Clip Week: The Police - Everyone Stares Movie Trailer

This is the trailer to the movie put together by Stewart Copeland of The Police. It uses footage he took over the career of the band. Some very entertaining stuff. Stewart is a one of my favorite drummers.

80's Video Clip Week: The Police - Synchronicity II

The Police in 1983 were the biggest band in the world with the very dark (for a hit record) Synchronicity dominating the charts and the band riding the wave of many hit singles, all very dark as well including the song for this video of Synchronicity II about suburban dissatisfaction and the grind of work, but especially the extremely misunderstood Every Breath You Take. Just like R.E.M.'s 1987 hit The One I Love this is only a love song if you didn't listen to the song and or you have a very twisted take on love. Personally I skip the song when I listen to the cd now just because I don't need to hear it ever again. It was beaten to death for me by 1984. I only saw The Police once at this show if your interested in reading about it.

Ann Coulter's Crazy Remarks On The Today Show

You have to wonder why Matt Lauer and The Today Show would have a certifiable conservative nutcase like Ann Coulter on at all. But I guess it's designed to stir up "controversy" as they say and throw red meat to the rubes and dupes who believe her. She says things off the top of her head because they sound good to her and make alot of sense in her mind but they sound to sane people like the delusional ranting of a someone who needs serious psychiatric help.

Does the phrase "sick in the head" ring a bell?

Jon Stewart, Bill Bennett And Gay Marriage

Please, try not to laugh when Bennett mentions polygamy as a reason gays shouldn't be allowed to marry. I know it's hard but you have to try.

Jon Stewart destroys Bill Bennett with something called reality and facts.

80's Video Clip Week: Stewart Copeland & Stan Ridgway - Don't Box Me In

The two ex-members of The Police and Wall Of Voodoo collaborate on this song for the soundtrack to the film Rumble Fish which was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Coppola made some great films in the 70's, most people know the two Godfather films and Apocalypse Now, but he also made The Conversation starring Gene Hackman which is a really, really good movie set in San Francisco. Hackman plays a surveillance expert who takes an interesting journey during the course of the film. Unfortunately he hasn't been the same creatively since that decade.

Tuesday, June 06, 2006

80's Video Clip Week: Peter Gabriel - Shock The Monkey

One of the best videos of the 80's.

Haditha Rorschach Test

Take the test designed by Tom Tomorrow and featured in his great cartoon This Modern World. It's easy and fun for the whole family, plus, it will tell you quite a lot about the people you know!

80's Video Clip Week: Billy Joel - Pressure

The video for the Billy Joel song Pressure was played in "high" rotation on MTV you could say in 1982/1983. The song is good but the video is better and still holds up quite well. At least I think so.

Monday, June 05, 2006

80's Video Clip Week: Dalis Car - The Judgement Is The Mirror

Dalis Car was the one off record by Mick Karn and Peter Murphy after their respective bands, Japan and Bauhaus broke up. It seems some people don't like this album but I do. Apparently Mick and Peter didn't have the same ideas musically and it never went beyond this one record. I would have never thought of using a laserdisc as the mirror but then that's why I am not a video director.

Buy it here.

Wolf Blitzer, Robert Kennedy & The Stolen 2004 Election

Wolf Blitzer had Robert Kennedy on to talk about the 2004 stolen election.

Who Killed The Electric Car?

Watch the trailer for a new documentary about the death of the electric car...before it even got started. Golly gee, Beaver, who could have wanted that to happen? And no, Dick Cheney didn't shoot them!

Here is the website.

80's Video Clip Week: Robert Hazard - Escalator Of Life

Escalator Of Life by Robert Hazard has always been a favorite mine from the 80's. I would think Robert is doing just fine with the publishing rights (I hope he owns his own song) to Girls Just Want To Have Fun that turned Cyndi Lauper into a star. With the help of a hit video, naturally. If that isn't 80's enough for you I don't know what is.

Tucker Carlson, Robert Kennedy & The Stolen 2004 Election

Tucker Carlson and Robert Kennedy get into a fairly heated discussion about Kennedy's Rolling Stone article on the stolen 2004 election. The piece is well worth reading and no the big media aren't covering just like they didn't on election night like they should have. Surprised?

Keith Olbermann Destroys Bill O'Reilly....Again

Anyone, I repeat anyone, who listens to anything Bill O'Reilly has to say and actually believes him needs to get serious psychiatric care immediately.

I would think it is obvious but some things can't be repeated too many times. Not only does O'Reilly get facts wrong on a regular basis (or distorts or misrepresents them) he lies on a regular basis as well. But anyone with a decently functioning brain should know this.

Alice Cooper - Under My Wheels

From the original line up of the Alice Cooper band comes the classic song Under My Wheels from the Beat Club program. A nice introduction in German from an attractive fraulein starts off the video, later in it you can see Alice Cooper's belly button if that sort of thing interests you. Good, clean fun from 1971.

Devo - Beautiful World

The Devo video for the song Beautiful World is probably my favorite promo video ever. Mainly because it actually has something to say and it is so well done with it's great mix of old black and white stock footage with Booji Boy and the band.

It's a beautiful world we live in
A sweet romantic place
Beautiful people everywhere
The way they show they care
Makes me want to say
It's a beautiful world
It's a beautiful world
It's a beautiful world
For you
For you
For you......

Major Article On The Theft Of The 2004 Election

Robert F. Kennedy Jr has written an article for Rolling Stone magazine detailing the theft of the Presidential election of 2004.

Let the right wing howling begin.

Cognitive Dissonance will do that to you.

Thanks to Mark Crispin Miller for the tip.

Update: The article is really well done and shows in detail how the fraud was executed. Ohio was stolen by Ken Blackwell who now wants to be governor of that state. Scary. He should be in jail.

The GOP will steal the midterm election this fall as well if they are not stopped.

One thing that is strange is there are quite a few "progressive" blogs that I go to on a daily basis who don't have anything posted on this and I don't know why that is. This isn't a "conspiracy" as that word is used to make people seem crazy, it is based on numbers and statistics. When someone says the odds of a series of events happening are 1 in 660,000 as happened in the 2004 election I would say it needs looking into.

Patti Smith's - People Have The Power

Remember all the music stars that went out on the Concert For Change tour in the fall of 2004 to support the moderate Democratic candidate John Kerry for President against the extremely right wing George Bush? Seems like a lifetime ago with George Bush now below 30% in opinion polls (you have to wonder who these people are that still support him, besides Ted Nugent I mean) and another couple of years to go while he ruins our country and makes us even more of a pariah in the world. R.E.M., Bruce Springsteen, Babyface, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, Dixie Chicks, John Fogerty, Eddie Vedder, Jackson Browne, James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt all show up for the big finale to sing the Patti Smith tune People Have The Power. Part of the fun is to see who has to look at the monitor to sing the lyrics.

I'll bet the backstage party was pretty good.

Buy the original song here.
